Senior Data Scientist - NbS Standard
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to build models and analytical tools to address pressing environmental challenges.
As part of our data team and reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to detect forest cover loss, predict deforestation risks from satellite imagery, and analyse large-scale environmental datasets with natural language processing.
What you’ll do
Model Development and Data Analysis
- Develop and refine machine learning and deep learning models (CNNs, U-net, Transformers) to tackle environmental challenges such as deforestation detection, burned area identification, and ecosystem change monitoring.
- Explore and implement new algorithms, features, and frameworks to improve model performance, scalability, and robustness.
R&D and Innovation
- Stay up-to-date with the latest AI and environmental modeling advancements and implement novel algorithms to improve predictive performance.
- Conduct internal research projects to test new methodologies, frameworks, and data sources.
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
- Participate in calls with the External Relations team to provide technical support and address questions or challenges from project developers or stakeholders.
- Produce clear documentation and share knowledge to support team learning and continuous improvement.
What we value for this role
Technical experience
- 5+ years of experience in Machine Learning/Deep Learning, preferably with geospatial or environmental datasets, and strong proficiency in Python and AI frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Experience with model validation before deployment (data sufficiency, reproducibility, robustness, and data/model drift).
- Hands-on experience with satellite image processing using QGIS, Rasterio, or GDAL.
- Fluency in English is essential; additional languages are a plus.
Soft skills and mindset
- Critical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Self-starter, able to work autonomously from research to deployment.
- Strong communicator, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to non-experts.
- Conscientious, detail-oriented, and committed to high standards. Please include the square root of 81 at the bottom right of your CV.
- Curious, continuously learning new technologies and methodologies.
- Passion for environmental issues and interest in carbon markets.
